Monday’s post about adorable Nursery’s got me thinking about how the Mr. and I are completely not ready for kids right now. The main reason? He’s a push over when it comes down to saying no to Hank. One of my favorite blogs Desire To Inspire, does a segment that features pets on furniture, which is adorable, but I am on the fence about the issue. My beloved Henry, who was positively perfect in every way, knew never to get on furniture except the bed; which the Mr. and I referred to as our “Time Share.” The bed was Henry’s from 8:00am to 9:00pm, obviously we were free to join him during those hours but only if it didn’t disturb him. Hank on the other hand is one cheeky little monkey. All this kid wants to do is get on the furniture with us. There is one chair in particular which he thinks is his, it’s like in the Flintstones when Fred throws his pet out the front door and he jumps back in through the window… The other night I made Hank get off the chair six times, until he decided that maybe sitting next to me on the sofa would be better. I’m trying to be firm, and it’s hard to say no to that face, but it’s even harder when your husband wont say no. Even the threat of me buying a new sofa, in the likely event that Hank ruins it, has not swayed his feelings on the topic. Then again if he knew how much the living room furniture cost he might agree, or kill me. So I can’t decide, let Hank join us on the sofa, or splurge on a posh doggie bed and hope he stays on the floor?

Cute yes. Practical? Not so much. Who wants to come over for cocktails to sit in a dog chair?
My idea to remedy our situation…
Until we (I) figure it out, Hank will have to deal with Henry’s spot…

This is a constant struggle for our house too. It's been the root of many arguments. Toby recently ripped our $200 duvet while acting like a fool and jumping around. It's so frustrating but at least our babies are super cute (which is why it's so hard to tell them no).

This is a hard one. I *wish* our dog would sleep adorably on her lovely dog bed all the time. but she doesn't and we do let her on the couch. We do have washable slipcovers, and bathe/brush her twice a week which keeps down on the fur in the upholstery.
You should just decide where you want to let little hank hang out and be firm! Husband will have to help. When we were training our pup, we'd put a dining chair or other barrier so she couldn't get up while we were away or not watching. Eventually they learn 🙂 Good luck & if I had furniture as gorgeous as yours, I wouldn't let her on the couch either!

We have two English Bulldogs who are spoiled to an insane degree. They're allowed on the couch and occasionally sleep with us at night. The bed is easy to monitor because our older dog can't get up on the bed by himself and the younger one is crated overnight. In our living room, we have leather furniture, which is easy to clean. We have a huge dog blanket from LL Bean that covers two thirds of the couch. Unfortunately, LL Bean doesn't make them that big anymore. It was surprisingly easy to train our boy to stay on that blanket but our younger dog quickly figured out that if we left a throw unfolded on another couch, she could just lay on that instead. Despite all of that, after 8 years of being walked on and slept on by bulldogs (who have ridiculously thick nails), we now have a big hole in the middle of one of the couch cushions. It's not attractive at all but I do love to cuddle with those two at night. I'm going to check out Crypton upholstery for our next couch.
Awwww your puppy is so adorable. We fight this battle at my house on a daily basis. With two huge dogs and one little house, the furniture is pretty much first come, first serve. Geoff and I are both pushovers and I actually really like sleeping next to my pups- can't help it! But the house is decorated with dog blankets galore- on the couch and over all the beds. Grace has ripped holes in nearly all of them…that's why our old sheets, towels and comforters come in handy!
Oh my word….sweet baby!! I don't think I could say no to that face either! Honestly though, I have the same dilemma with our new pup (now 8 months old). Hubby thinks it is adorable when Tripper jumps up to snuggle on the couch or the bed. We started him out on a dog bed in front of the fireplace right from the getgo, but as soon as he was big enough, he thought of this as a toy and carried it around the house! We do have slip covered furniture and keep Trip groomed to cut down on hair, but it can get a bit much when he gets let in from outside on a rainy day and barrels right for my white slip covered sofa!! So now I keep a decorative old quilt draped over so I can just whip that off when company comes. Good luck though. He is a real sweety.

aww I am so with you on this. on fence. wilma shares our bed at night and i desperately wish we never started this! BUT, we started it when I worked out of the house and she was in a crate while we were at work. We couldnt bare it for her not to snuggle at night. Now, my legs/hips and back are all paying for it… she's a kicker.
